Dive Into the World of Lobster and the Northumberland Strait Marine Ecosystem
When you come visit us at the Homarus Centre, we want you to feel as though you’ve pulled on a wetsuit to dive below the waves of the Northumberland Strait.
Luckily, with us, you get to stay on dry land and take advantage of our knowledgeable guides, who will bring our marine ecosystem and its species to life for you every step of the way.
So, what can you expect?
Well, you’ll start with a guided tour that will engage every one of your senses as you learn about the ecosystem, explore the life cycle of a lobster, and get a look inside the mini hatchery. You could even get a sneak peek at real researchers hard at work!
Next, you can get hands-on at our lab counter and scientific carts or get your hands wet in our lobster-shaped touch tank where you can get up close and personal with some of our local species, including lobster, oysters, quahogs, surf clams, mussels, scallops, and sea stars. Our giant wall aquarium will also let you watch species interact with their habitat, something many find soothing and relaxing.
In our multi-function room, there’s a kids zone as well as a place to learn about conservation measures. Then it’s time to head outside to our replica fishing shed so you can look at photos, listen to stories, and explore the gear of our fishing community.
By the time you leave, you’ll not only be brimming with knowledge about lobster and our marine ecosystem, but also with unforgettable memories and experiences.
